The main reason the Soviet Union and the United States became rivals during the Cold War was because they both believed in two opposing political views. The Soviet Union was a Communist nation which means that citizens have no rights whatsoever and the federal government controls everything. This totally goes against the ideals of the United States who is a democracy and believes in freedom for everyone.
