After World War 2, the Soviet Union took control over some of the countries that Hitler had taken over, meaning that instead of liberating Poland and Checkoslovakia the Soviets took control over them, and that greatly angered the United States and our European allies.
However, the most obvious example of how Europe was divided after the second world war was Germany.
It was divided into two parts, with West Germany being a capitalist country supported by the United States and East Germany being a communist country that was ruled by the Soviet Union.
Another big change in western Europe was the presence of nuclear warheads in East Germany. It would have been very easy for the Soviet Union to wipe Europe off of the map with nuclear missiles so close.
