SOP’s are standard operating procedures, and are designed by each biological service/manufacturer/provider. OSHA is a primary reason since they regulate worker safety. Chemical hygiene is important because it not only prevents cross-contamination, of products, but also reduces waste and allows for the safety of workers and those receiving the product. Like blood or manufacturing Medications. Imagine getting disinfectant or latex into your medication/pill bottle. That is deadly for some! But it is unhealthy for all. A better example is preventing organic solvent inhalation, since working with formaldehyde is dangerous. The goal is to minimize unnecessary exposure to potent chemicals and to contain their contact within reasonable limits.
