The two squares x and y are mathematically similar. The areas of x and y are 17cm squared and 272cm squared, respectively. The length of x is 5cm. Fine the corresponding length of y.

I would set this up as a a proportion:
[tex] \frac{17cm}{5cm} [/tex]  · [tex] \frac{272cm}{x} [/tex] 
17x = 1360
x = 20 cm
