The enzyme pepsin is most effective in a pH range of (1.5-1.6) thus working at optimum efficiency in an highly acidic environment. The enzyme pepsin is used for the digestion of proteins as pepsin brakes down small proteins into smaller peptides.

An extremely high or low pH results in complete loss of activity of enzymes thus causing in loss of their function.

Different enzymes work in different pH environments with some working in acidic environment and other's working in basic environment.
