Anton van Leeuwenhoek's most important discovery was single-celled things which were alive. He developed a method for creating powerful microscope lenses.

Using these, he discovered bacteria, vacuoles, protists, and some other things (which can be considered less important). His observations disproved spontaneous generation, which is the idea that living things are generated spontaneously. These observations helped lay the basic foundations for cell theory.
