As the name indicate that in 1-octene there is a double bond on the first position in the eight carbon atoms chain THUS to detect its presence, we use bromine water test;

Add bromine water to the test tube containing octane/octene if the brown colour of bromine water disappears then octene is present.

Octane and 1-octene can be distinguished by a simple chemical test known as bromination.

Octane belongs to a hydrocarbon group known as alkane while 1-octene belongs to the alkene group.

Alkanes can be chemically distinguished from alkenes by bromination test. Alkanes are saturated compounds because their carbon backbones have no double or triple bonds, unlike alkenes whose carbon backbones have double bonds.

The presence of double bonds makes alkenes to be able to undergo addition reactions with bromine molecules. Such that:

C=C + Br2 ---> BrC-CBr

Thus, alkenes like 1-octene will be able to decolorize the yellow color of bromine water while alkanes like octane will not.
