For this case we must simplify the following expression and find the value of the variable "x":

[tex]3 (x-1) -8 = 4 (1 + x) +5[/tex]

We apply distributive property to the terms of parentheses:

[tex]3x-3-8 = 4 + 4x + 5[/tex]

We add similar terms:

[tex]3x-11 = 9 + 4x[/tex]

We subtract 4x on both sides:

[tex]3x-4x-11 = 9\\-x-11 = 9[/tex]

We add 11 to both sides:

[tex]-x = 11 + 9\\-x = 20\\x = -20[/tex]

Answer:

[tex]x = -20[/tex]
