1. add 3 to -3 and 9, which will cancel out -3 and leave you with 2x=12-x

2. add x to 2x and -x which will cancel out -x and leave you with 3x (there will always be a 1 in front of x if it has no variable in front of it x=1) which will leave you with 3x=12

3. divide 12 by 3 and you get 4..so x=4
