When these land masses separated and migrated, each of these birds had to face severe changes in their conditions, including the appearance of predators, that forced them to adapt. This is the reason why the rhea of South America, and the Emu of Australia, are now so different.
The South American Rhea has many genetic differences from the Australian Emu because of the continental drift. Now exposed to different climes, the two birds mutated differently in order to survive their new ecosystem.
