The central idea is a one-sentence statement that sums up or encapsulates the major ideas of a speech. This short and general summary is the most important thought about the topic and it tells the audience or the readers what the text is about. In academic writing, each paragraph has a central idea, and very often this sentence is placed at the beginning, however, it can also be at the end or in the middle of the paragraph.
