John Locke

  • The social contract is an agreement  in which people exchange some of  their individual freedoms for common  security.

Locke believed that human nature is based on reason and tolerance. He also believed that human nature allowed people to be selfish.

William Blackstone

  • Government cannot obstruct citizens’ natural rights to life, property, and liberty.

William Blackstone was important becuase he created a record of common law.

Adam Smith

  • A free-market economy prevents a government from interfering too much with business and trade.

In a free market the prices for goods and services are determined by the open market and the consumers.

Thomas Hobbes

  • Natural law was given to humans by God.

Hobbes had a pessimistic outlook on human nature. He believed a monarchy was best.
