Dickens end the chapter with a cliffhanger. He did this often, as his books were oftern forst published in serial form for magazines. Later, the chapters would be put together to form a novel. So if you look at Dicken's wrok closely, you'll see that his chapter often end this way.

In this chapter we see Pip stealing food for the convict. Ironically, he's just as frightened of his sister as he is the convict.
