The map from 1900's suggests that even though the southern Balkans are a relatively small region, there are numerous ethnic groups in that part of the Peninsula, ethnic groups that have mostly different origins and are not even connected. The Greeks have Doric ancestry, the Albanians have Ilirian and Dacian origin, the Macedonians have Macedonian and Paionian, The Romanians have Thracian and Dacian, Serbs have Slavic and Sarmatian, and the Turks have Central Asian. All of this creates a small region that is abundant in different cultures and genetics, but that also has created lot of conflicts between the different ethnic groups.
Note:
The map is not accurate about the ethnic territories of the different peoples in the southern Balkans for the 1990's, if the accuracy of it is important in this case.
