Natural selection was actually accepted by a lot of people who knew what Darwin was talking about (e.g. Scientists and biologists..and other scientist relative to science were called).
Darwin was the first to realize the mechanisms that fundamentally drive this change: variation and natural selection. His theory caused controversy among his contemporaries but were gradually accepted. Darwin's theory earned general scientific acceptance after he published his "On the Origin of Species" in 1859.
