We just put the two expressions together; (4x + 12) (earn) and (loose) (2x - 5)

Total points = (4x + 12) +  (2x - 5)          <- notice how we use a plus sign,

this is important as if we didn't it would change the answer.

For example, (5) - (-2) = 7 , whereas when we use a plus, (5) + (-2) = 3

Points earned  for completing x levels =  4x+12.......(1)

Points lost in the video game = - (2x-5) [negative as they are lost]......(2)

Total Points gained  =  Algebraic  sum of equation 1  and equation 2 =

(4x+12) +  {- (2x-5) }  

Hence the expression for net points earned now = 4x+12 -2x +5 = 2x+17
