Today, monarchies still exist, but they can be very different from their predecessors. Discuss some of the European nations that still have a monarchy. How do the monarchies of today differ from those that existed centuries ago? What has remained the same

Some present monarchy is the current British monarchy.  (another examples would be Spain and Sweden).

What remained the same:
-it's hereditary
-it's for life
-a queen or king can resign and  we still call it "abdicate"
-the oldest child of the current monarch is likely to be the next in line

What has changed
-it's now largely  a representative position, devoid of power
-most countries now allow female queens (unlike in the past)
-some of the princes and princesses attend public schools
