You could use a model to find the answer because...
You draw a rectangle.
Split it in thirds (representing one third)
Shade one of those thirds.
Draw 3 lines across the whole rectangle.
Now, count how many mini sections you have.
The answer is 12.
So, your answer would be 1/12.
