The two general principles that determine whether the federal courts have jurisdiction over a case are subject matter jurisdiction and federal question jurisdiction. These two principles are detailed in Section I and Section II of Article III of the United States Constitution. Based on these facts the federal court determines its jurisdiction over a case.
