Given a quadratic equation [tex]ax^2+bx+c=0[/tex], we define the discriminant as

[tex]\Delta = b^2-4ac[/tex]

The number of real solutions of the equation depend on the sign of [tex]\Delta[/tex]:

  • If [tex]\Delta>0[/tex] the equation has two solutions
  • If [tex]\Delta=0[/tex] the equation has one double solution
  • If [tex]\Delta<0[/tex] the equation has no real solutions

In this case, we have

[tex]\Delta = 25-28=-3<0[/tex]

And so this equation has no real solutions.
