Before agriculture was developed, people had to hunt for food or gather it growing in the wild. By planting seeds and harvesting crops, people gained more control over their food supply. They could settle in a single place. They could store up grain for use throughout the year. They could build permanent structures to live in and gather together in towns and cities.
