The theme is the moral or the lesson of the story that can be applied universally. In other words, it applies to all. As you read both stories or passages, what are you supposed to have learned from each, and how do they differ?  For example, in Finding Nemo, one could say that the theme of the movie is ‘family will always have your back’ as is seen when Marlin stops at nothing to save his son, Nemo.
