Tim walked 3/10 mile to the post office. Then he walked 1/5 mile to the gym. Draw a set of fraction strips to model the total number of miles Tim walked. Draw a different set of fraction strips to show equivalent fractions with a common denominator. How many miles did Tim walk all together?

You have 2 denominators so they need to be in the same family 5 and 10 are in the same family you take the biggest denominator and that is your common denominator and 3 + 1 =4 so 4/10 is your answer. (unless you need to simplify)
