The House of Burgesses was the first house of representatives. It handled things like taxes and laws. The governor still had to approve all laws. The Mayflower Compact and the House of Burgesses set the stage for American democracy. The house of Burgesses had a limited royal power and increased citizen involvement in the colonial government. The new experimental democracy became the  example of how to create a successful democratic Government for the United States. States Such as the Southern Colonies and those would be Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia found this a good example.
