Some European scholars at that time asserted that Africa needed European involvement. This is not necessarily true. Aftican societies often predate other cultures which is a example of longevity and success, to some extent. African cultures demonstrated self sufficiency through internal trade, and displayed wealth and vast knowledge through metalworking, architecture, irrigation, and agriculture.

After contact with European powers, Africa was weakened by disease, draining of resources, and colonialism.
