The Battle of the Alamo was fought in the Republic of Texas in what is now San Antonio in 1836. The Alamo was a Spanish mission turned fortress. There were around 250 Texan soldiers defending the Alamo and around 1,800 soldiers in the attacking Mexican army. All of the 250 Texans, including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, died during the siege of the Alamo and about 600 Mexican soldiers died in the battle. The outcome was a victory for the Mexican army, but the defeat at the Alamo inspired the Texans who later defeated Mexican General Santa Ana at the Battle of San Jacinto near what is now Houston, winning independence for Texas from Mexico.

Sample response: Student responses should include:  The Battle of the Alamo was fought between 150 Texans, led by William Travis, and 6000 Mexican troops, led by Mexican President General Santa Anna.  The battle lasted for nearly 2 weeks.  At the end of the battle the few Texan survivors that remained were executed by Santa Anna.  This bloody battle inspired other Texans to fight against the rule of Santa Anna and led to the Battle of San Jacinto where Texans sought revenge for the Alamo.  The victory of this battle ended the Taxes Revolution.
