This period is known as the Dark Ages. The period between 486 AD and the 1400's. This was a period of general chaos in Europe and the loss of much of the civilization that had been established by the Romans. Europe emerged from the Dark Ages as a result of Muslim influence and the rebirth of knowledge in Southern Europe, especially in the Italian city-states.
