The Articles of Confederation were the basis of the first government of the United States of America. The newly independent British colonies were unwilling to give up the (relative) sovereignty and independence they had just won.
The Articles of Confederation also focused on a weaker Federal Government as they feared experiencing the same rule as they did under the British in contrast to the current Constitution which focuses on a strong Federal Government.
