In my view, the NASA Research and Education Network (NREN) that was used to allow engineers to control wind tunnels with a simple manipulation of their desktops. The system was developed to improve the re-entry space flight of the shuttle and future space vehicles. For that purpose, fast computers processors needed to be built and their powerful enhanced performance was later use to create eh next generation internet.
