Under President Andrew Jackson around the 1800s, only white male were protected and provided equal rights and benefits; only they could vote, meaning only they were considered citizens, other people were property.
Native Americans, African Americans, and White Women, were excluded from privileges; they didn't even have the right to vote.
Andrew Jackson is also remembered as the "Indian Killer" due his excluding policies such as the "Indian Removal Act" since southern tribes were brutally removed from their domains, so white farmers could get the soil.
