The causes of the English Civil War were:

  • The King rule without Parliament for 11 years.

King Charles I decided to avoid Parliament for 11 years, which was known as the personal rule of Charles I. This was due to the fact that he did not want to conform to the requests of Parliament and its scrutiny.

  • The King demanded the arrest of five members of Parliament.

In 1642, King Charles I attempted to charge of treason to five members of Parliament but the arrest failed.

The causes of the Glorious Revolution were:

  • The King proclaimed religious freedom without consulting Parliament.

In 1687, King James II decided to support the religious toleration and issued the Declaration of Indulgences, by which he established religious freedom.

  • Parliament feared the risk of a Catholic dynasty ruling England.

In 1688, James II had a son and this meant that the throne would pass to his Catholic son instead of his Protestant daughter, Mary. This represented a matter of concern for Parliament since they thought that a Catholic dynasty in the kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland was possible.
