This article, written by David Hertz, on March 15th, 2018, expounds on the possibility of the arrival of complete and utter drought in the near future for the city of Cape Town, South Africa. Day Zero, in fact, is the name that has been given to the day in which experts expect Cape Town to completely run out of any sources of water. This day was expected to come in 2019, however, there have been some rainfalls in the city and some of the water sources, particularly the dam, have been refilled with water. This, still, does not mean that the city will not run out of water at some point, given that they still have an active drought season going now for three years.
In regards to the passage what can be inferred is that just like this particular city is having to live with the consequences of a drought, brought on by the bad use of water sources and the lack of rainfall, the United States is also looking at a probable loss of water in the near future as they too have been facing drier-than-normal seasons. It also shows the problems that will arise in the near future if the lack of water continues. There is no mention of a day zero for the U.S, but it infers that this day might come, that there are examples in regions of the U.S where severe drought is being seen, and that this day zero may soon come if measures are not taken.
We can infer that problems with water shortages worldwide. The solution to that problem must be faced internationalyy, a local solution will only give us a temporary solution. As the most affect regions are the south western and western ones, we can infer that Cape Town is located in one of those regions. If we find the common characteristics of those regions we may have a clue of what is going on. Although the problems may require years to solve, something needs to be done immediately. Drought conditions can trigger a lot of problems not just in those areas, the impact can spread around the country having economic and social issues.
