In Chapter 7 of "A Yellow Raft In Blue Water" by Michael Dorris, Rayona confesses the whole story of her family history to Evelyn; her mother suffering of alcoholism and leaving her at the reservation with Ida, her experience with Father Tom and her accepting the train ticket back to Seattle, but she intentionally misses the train and stays in Montana with Sky and Evelyn. Rayona expects Evelyn to be angry with her, but she is understanding and empathic instead. This is important to Rayona because she no longer has to live the lie. Rayona begins to face reality again and they both begin to search for her mother.
