During his reign, Theophilos had many accomplished acts.
As Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, Theophilos was: the last advocate of iconoclasm (or the destruction of religious symbols/art), very well educated, and often found wandering the area informally to interact with his citizens. Beginning in 1831, Theophilos personally ledhis armies in wars against the Arabs, Bulgarians, and Serbs (to whom he later granted independence). Theophilos hired brilliant architects and engineers to build strong fortresses as defenses against the Magyars, the Vikings, and Muslims.
He also restored the University of Constantinople and promoted cultural advances in classical study.
