The Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and the battle at Wounded Knee in 1890 are examples of Indian removal policy towards Native Americans. Between 1860 and 1890's the Plains Indians Wars took place. Americans and plains Indians fought since Americans wanted to force Indians move to reservations. During the Sand Creek Massacre (1864) more than 150 Cheyenne men, women, and children were killed by the Colorado militia. While at the battle at Wounded Knee (1890) U.S. soldiers slaughtered thousands of unarmed native Americans including women and children. The Wounded Knee represented the end of any armed resistance on the part of the Native American. In 1887, under the Dawes Act, Native Americans were assigned poor lands. What is worse, the concept of Americanization led to the Indian culture destruction.
