John Steinbeck opens his short story "The Chrysanthemums" with C- a description of the setting.
The story is set in winter, December. The author describes the Salinas Valley, California. The valley is covered with fog and it looks like a "closed pot". The plough - a machine used to work the land- has left an open path and this looks black. The bushes along the river have yellow leaves. Then, the author describes a wintry setting in one of the most productive agricultural areas in the U.S.
