It's a deep rift valley which runs along the middle of the ridge along almost its entire length.
An area of intense volcanism under the Atlantic Ocean that is causing the area to be rifted apart. Two plates are moving in opposite directions, and the Earth is "healing" the "wound" with the lava of the volcanoes.
