It's a practice of serving oneself, like most stores in the Western world, buffet restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and so forth. The price tags stamped on the products or bar coded onto them to allow the customer to choose what they want to buy and then proceed to where the transaction will be completed (Point of sale or point of purchase).
