The leader of the Cuban Revolution who succeeded Fulgencio Batista in power in 1959 was Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, also kown as Fidel Castro.

He ruled from 1959 to 1976 as prime minister and from 1976 to 2008 as president of Cuba. Castro died on November 25, 2016.
