Many believe that the cause of the K2 extinction event (The end of the Mesozoic era) was caused by a large meteor impact in the modern day Yucatan Peninsula. The meteor created such a large impact that it launched enough dust and other debri into the atmosphere to block out light from the sun, causing plants to die, which caused a chain reaction leading to the decline of most dinosaur species.
