Hispaniola: An island of the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean, divided into the states of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. After its European discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1492, Hispaniola was colonized by the Spaniards, who surrendered the western part (now Haiti) to France in 1697.

St. Dominigue: This was a French colony on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola from 1659 to 1804, in what is now Haiti. The French had established themselves on the western portion of the islands of Hispaniola and Tortuga by 1659.

Haiti: It's the western one-third of the island of Hispaniola between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. This small, tropical country is west of the Dominican Republic and is south of the island of Cuba. Haiti is very mountainous. Hayti is the Indian name for the country and it means "land of mountains".
