1. Floss.

Do this at least once a day. This helps remove any food and plaque that your toothbrush can't get to.

2. Get regular dental cleanings.

Your dentist can recognize gum disease in its early stages if you visit the dentist regularly, so that way, symptoms can be treated before it gets really serious.

3. Quit smoking (if you are)

Yet another reason for smokers to quit: Smoking is strongly associated with the onset of gum disease. Since smoking weakens your immune system, it also makes it much harder to fight off a gum infection. Plus, smoking makes it difficult for your gums to heal once they're damaged, it just makes it worse.
