Canadians are generally taught to be friendly, polite and respectful to both friends and strangers alike. Canada basically follows standard western cultural traditions in regards to things like greetings, rude gestures, and gift-giving. The most taboo subjects of conversation in Canada are politics, religion, and sex.

All of these are cultural taboos of Canada:

1. Don’t talk about any aspect of religion unless you are sure the people you are with are receptive. Most people will not be receptive and will try to get away.

2. Learn something about the culture before you arrive.

3. We don’t have Indians; we have First Nations Peoples.

4. The term Eskimo is offensive to the Inuit.

5. Canadians are not just like Americans, but speak differently. Don’t go there.

6. Don’t talk loud.

7. Don’t talk loud about money.

8. Don’t do a negative comparison in a loud voice.

9. Do not refer to people by skin colour or what you perceive is their ethnic background.

10. Our immigrants and refugees are not a problem; they are an asset.

11. Be polite to everyone, especially people working in service industries.
