[T]wo of my wearied countrymen who were chained together . . . preferring death to such a life of misery . . . jumped into the sea; . . . I believe many more would very soon have done the same, if they had not been prevented by the ship's crew. . . . However, two of the wretches were drowned, but they got the other, and afterwards flogged him unmercifully, for thus attempting to prefer death to slavery.

Which of these statements contains evidence from the passage that could be used to support the claim that conditions on slave ships were inhumane? Select all that apply

People were chained together.
Many jumped into the sea rather than endure the conditions.
Some people were flogged unmercifully
Conditions were crowded.
Many died from disease.

Respuesta :

The correct answer is People were chained together,  Many jumped into the sea rather than endure the conditions,  Some people were flogged unmercifully.

Indeed, these statements explicitly describe inhumane conditions and very brutal treatment but nothing is explicitly said about crowding or diseases. For a claim to be effective it has to be factually unambiguous and although it could be inferred from the passage that the slaves were crowded and subject to diseases it is still too ambiguous to be considered as a fact and using such ambiguous statements would discredit the rest of the claim.
