What is the 10% rule?

The 10 percent rule states that when an organism/species is consumed by another organism/species of higher trophic level, the latter (discards, stores, transforms) only 10% of energy. The rest of the energy is lost during energy transfer, or transformed as (perspiration, waste, respiration), or lost to incomplete digestion by species of a higher trophic level.

This is for PLATO btw :) & I'll give brainliest!

An ecologist, Raymond Lindeman, introduced the ten percent rule in 1942. It is not an exact rule but rather a rule of thumb. It states that that when an organism/species is consumed by another organism/species of higher trophic level, only ten percent of energy is stored by the higher trophic one. The rest of the energy is lost during energy transfer; or transformed as respiration; or lost due to incomplete digestion.

The 10% rule is - only 10 percent of the total energy stored as biomass in a trophic level is passed from one trophic level to the next trophic level.

The 10% Rule

  • it states that when the lower trophic level organism is consumed by a higher trophic level organism
  • in this process only 10% of total energy is passed in an ecosystem from the lower trophic level to the higher.
  • rest 90% of the energy is lost during transfer, cellular functions such as respiration, or incomplete digestion.

Thus, The 10% rule is - only 10 percent of the total energy stored as biomass in a trophic level is passed from one trophic level to the next trophic level.
