The sky is blue because molecules that are in the air, distribute more blue light from the sun, rather than distributing more red light. Blue light is scattered in different directions by tiny molecules of air in the Earth's atmosphere.  An example of when red light comes into play is when the sun is starting to set, you may see red-ish orange type of color because the blue light was already scattered out.
