They are both similar because they give praise to God.
But they are different because of their content. While a Thanksgiving Psalm has the psalmist giving thanks to God for his protection and deliverance from personal distress, the Hymn Psalm contains songs praising the Lord and offering him thanksgiving for who he was and what he had done.
