Tom Robinson could be considered the mockingbird of the novel. If we take the meaning of a mockingbird described above literally, we can see many connections between Tom and the bird. A mockingbird symbolizes innocence, and as we read the novel we come to realize that Tom is innocent of all crimes. The title of the novel,’To Kill A Mockingbird’ also references Tom’s murder, because he is the only innocent man out of two men killed in the novel, the other man being Bob Ewell.
