You plug in x = 1 and y = -4 into the system of equations and see if they fit:-

y = -4x

- 4 = -4 * 1 = -4         This fits

y = 2x - 2

-4 = 2*1 - 2 = 0   Does NOT fit.

So (1, -4) is not a solution.
