The nature of Napoleonic authority has long been the subject of debate. However, logic might show that the Napoleonic era was a period of democratic rule.

How Was Napoleon a democratic leader?

To begin, Napoleon established himself as a democratic leader by instituting numerous political changes. Napoleon launched his Egyptian Expedition in 1798-99, with the director's approval. It was a military disaster, but Napoleon returned to France as a hero, saving the country from the second coalition.

In 1799, Bonaparte staged his "Coup D'etat," establishing the Consulate, a governing body representing one country in another, with himself as First Consul. This does not appear to be fair at first, but Napoleon then put his new constitution to a Plebiscite or popular vote, and it was adopted by a large majority.

Despite the fact that the constitution gave the First Consul almost total power, it was the French people who voted, as a democratic society would, to impose this new political system.

Thus, Napolean is a democratic reformer.
